Today votes are being cast for local elections and a mayor for Birmingham. Disillusioned by the Lib Dems, not enamoured by Labour and going nowhere near the Tories, I'm stuck as to who to vote for. In the mayoral debate, I honestly don't care. I'm tired of Birmingham as a talking point; it's just a place where I live. I'm tired of being an advocate, of getting annoyed at stereotypes. Birmingham is not shit, but people's voices have grown hoarse repeating that mantra.
I'm simply not educated enough on the mayoral topic, and that's my fault. I'm not proud of the fact I won't be casting a vote today. It's not a statement, except of apathy. So many people have put so much hard work into the Yes campaign; people whose opinions I trust, but not blindly enough to cast my vote in that direction. I was taught years ago to think for myself, and I've been too busy trying to live my life to think about whether a man gets to wear a nice hat. Sorry. (I also don't mean this to belittle the efforts people have made in this long-running campaign; that was simply the sum of my knowledge on the topic.)
Good luck to everyone in the Yes campaign. I hope Birmingham gets what's best for it.
